This is a genuine, authentic brick from the original home of West Publishing. The brick was recently rescued from the current demolition project. These original buildings were the beginnings of a publishing empire that begun with John Briggs West in 1872 in the heart of downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. The significance of these buildings in the history of legal information publishing and distribution are well-known to all law librarians. Many of the tools used by lawyers and librarians were developed in this very building, including the key number system, West’s Reporters, and Black’s Law Dictionary. See this article by Professor Ross E. Davies published in the Charleston Law Review for more information about West Publishing, including building pictures.
